What Is Palmistry?

Palmistry is the art of reading hands to predict our futures, get an insight to our lives or learn more about ourselves or other people. Palmistry isn't just about reading the lines on our hands, palmistry is split in to 2 groups…

Chirognomy: reading a person from the shape of the hands and fingers.
Chiromancy: reading a person from the lines and patterns of the palm.

There is a lot of debate on which hand to read, the left or the right. Some people say that you should use you dominant hand, the hand you write with, but I feel for more of an accurate reading both hands should be considered.

Note: The meanings given below are general and are intended as a guide just to get you started. Intuition is also used in palmistry.

Hand Shapes

The Basic Hand
The basic hand has a short broad palm and stubby fingers. This kind of hand doesn't seem to have many lines, but the ones that are there a very prominent and deep.

Characteristics: People with this type of hand tend to think of themselves before others and can be very suspicious. This type of person is also a lover of food and drink.

The Square Hand
The square hand is pretty much that, square in shape with a wide palm.

Characteristics: People with this type of hand tend to be down to earth and keep themselves to themselves, very private individual. Very practical with common sense.

The Conical Hand
The conical hand is long and full with long tapering fingers. It is wider at the base.

Characteristics: People with this type of hand tend to be artistic and loving. They loved to be praised and be center of attention. They tend to have lots of friends and can be very talkative. The gift of the gab is an asset to their personality.

The Spatula Hand
The spatula hand has an almost triangular palm and fingers tend to be broader nearer the ends.

Characteristics: People with this type of hand tend to be restless maybe because of the amount of energy the posses, always looking for new challenges and experiences.

The Intellectual Hand
The intellectual hand is long and bony especially around the joints. The appearance is generally rugged.

Characteristics: People with this type of hand tend to be quiet and love being on there own, tends to hide away from problems rather than face up to them. Good imagination and deep thinking.

The Spiritual Hand
The spiritual hand is long and slender with long nails.

Characteristics: People with this type of hand tend to be in a world of their own and very sensitive. Theses type of people can feel the emotions of others and they rely on their strong intuition.

Mounts Of The Palm

The mounts are the raised fleshy pads on the hand and are said buy some to represent aspects of our personality. Although alot of palm readers today don't actually use them for reading purposes, but I've included them here for reference.

1. Mount Of Venus
A high springy mount means you have plenty of energy. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you can be insecure and rely on others for help and advice.

2. Lower Mount Of Mars
A large mount can suggest  hidden anger and loves to argue. A flat and under developed mount can suggest  you can be to soft and let others boss you around.

3. Mount Of Jupiter
A large mount can suggest  a need to feel important and you take personal comments to heart. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you feel that the world is against you and things always seem to go wrong.

4. Mount Of Saturn
A large mount can suggest you are serious and hardworking. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you always look on the down side of a situation, instead of looking at the positive side.

5. Mount Of Apollo
A large mount can suggest you have a positive outlook and always look on the brighter side of life. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you lack a sense of humour and take things rather seriously.
6. Mount Of Mercury
A large mount can suggest you have great communication with others and are very open minded. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you find it hard to mix with others, not from the want of doing so, but more of feeling shy.

7. Upper Mount Of Mars
A large mount can suggest  you have a strong personality and find it easy to cope under stress. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you feel a need to protect yourself from day to day living.

8. Mount Of The Moon
A large mount can suggest  you have a sensitive personality and have a good imagination. A flat and under developed mount can suggest you find it hard to concentrate and seem to go with everyone else's thoughts rather than put your own opinion across.

The "Plain Of Mars" is sometimes referred to as the middle of the palm.

Lines Of The Palm

The lines of the palm are the most significant part of palm reading. They are like a map of our lives and can give a good deal of information from health conditions to how many children we are likely to have.  Again both hands should be considered for more accurate interpretations.

I will also mention here the simian crease (see photo left) or as it's more commonly known today as palmar crease. The palmer crease is a line that goes right across the middle of the palm with no break. This line has nothing to do with palmistry, but rather a genetic condition that is often found in people with down syndrome, Aarskog syndrome and fetal alcohol syndrome. Although it is said that it can occur in about 1 in 40 people with no genetic disorders.

1. Life Line
The life line can give us to clues to health problems and life quality. Depending on which other line it touches it can give clues to what sort of problems, if it close to the head line it can indicate mental health issues. Also we can see what sort of childhood we have had by looking near the top of the life line, just above where the thumb is joined to the hand. Broken lines near the top of the life line that touch the headline can indicate a very difficult childhood.

2. Head Line

The headline refers to mental ability and can show how we cope with life in general. If the headline is not touching the lifeline it can suggest we will be able to cope with most things in life.

3. Fate Line
The fate line shows how much control we have in our life's, if it is very close to the life line it can indicate much of our life is influenced by our parents. A long deep fate line can suggest that  you have good control of your life, where as a fate line with many breaks indicates your life is in fates hands, in the sense that things happen for a reason and you seem to have no control over what happens. This is where the term "The Hand Of Fate" stems from.

4. Heart Line
The heart line relates to love and emotions and whether we let our hearts rule our heads and vice versa.

5. Apollo Line
The Apollo line indicates how well we do in life in the form of success, fame and fortune.

6. Relationship Line
The relationship line is just that, it indicates how many long term relationships that we may have in our life's. Broken lines can indicate rocky relationships and divorce. The lines do not necessarily mean marriage they also represent long term relationships.

7. Child Line
The child line indicates how many children we may have. It does not necessarily mean that we may give birth to these children they could be adopted or from another relationship.

Note: These meanings are general there is a lot more to palmistry. I could write pages and pages of information on palmistry but I like to keep things simple. This is just to give you an idea of how palmistry works and to get you started, again both hands should be considered.
